ABOUT THE
RANCH
The
Murphy family has ranched Northwest Colorado for the better part of a hundred
years and big game hunting has always been an important part of their
life. For the last two decades they have allowed hunting on a limited
basis and during that time have built a solid reputation for quality animals and
a near perfect harvest rate.
Hunting
& weather conditions on National Forest land changed the face of
Northwest
Colorado hunting about ten years ago. Increased early archery & muzzle loading
pressure moves the majority of elk out of the forest onto private land.
The Murphy place lies directly below the National Forest and right above hay
meadows and pastures that feed elk at night.
Late in
October or early November, cold weather and snow move the elk South &
West toward the low county. For public land hunters finding the right time
and place depends purely on luck.
Luckily, the Murphy Ranch has never relied on migrating elk to fill hunting
tags. Now that they have become an official member of the "Ranching
for Wildlife" program, their twenty five tags can be filled during the
September rut or in early October before the weather sets in.
Lawrence
Murphy takes pride in his deer hunting, and rightly so. While deer
populations have dropped in the surrounding area, his have increased along with
antler size. He has been practicing wildlife ranching as it pertains to
feed, and human contact for the last 20 years. Limiting the deer hunts to
12, guarantees most another year to grow. Having mature bucks during
breeding season ensures a quality gene pool & successful birth rates.
The Murphy
Ranch is the ideal location for big game hunting in Northwest Colorado.
